Catalogue Note
Later in the 1980s, Wucius Wong cultivated a further refinement of his style and returned to gongbi, fine brushwork method of painting landscapes. In 1980 he travelled to the legendary Mount Huang in Anhui province and created eight paintings in the Mountain Thoughts series the following year. In response to a period of illness, the resulting shadowy compositions are part of the artist's self-proclaimed 'black period'. However, the distinctive peaks enshrouded in clouds and streaked with sunlight are a marvellous use of contrast with ink and paper undertones. Fascinated by the works of Rembrandt and Turner, Wong transposes the wet style and luminous qualities of the Western oil painting masters onto the unforgiving paper surface with equal virtuosity.
