Catalogue Note

Being the first photographer to represent South Korea in the São Paulo Biennial, Korean photographer Atta Kim is highly regarded for the infusion of Zen philosophy and extremely refined technicalities in his works. Throughout the two decades, the ever prolific artist has created an eclectic body of works that speak of existence and impermanence in life, exhibiting across major venues that include the International Center of Photography, Venice Biennale, and the Samsung Museum of Art, among others. The tremendously popular ON-AIR Project, in which the present work The New York Series: ON-AIR Project 110-2 belongs, magnifies the omnipotent presence of time and ephemerality. Setting his camera to an eight hour exposure, Kim sets out across metropolises from around the world, transforming these densely populated cities into illusory ghost towns. In the present work, the crowded Time Square in New York, the symbol of capitalism in America, is transcended into an empty arena, with only beams of lights suggesting vague sense of motion. It seems as if under Kim's lens, the intertwined relationships between capital, money, and economic systems have all vanished into thin air, revealing only the essence and fundamentals of our immediate surroundings, truly attesting to the Zen philosophy advocated by the artist.
