Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. The colors are bright and fresh. All four edges are deckled and there are artist pinholes at the top two corners. There is a slight undulation to the sheet, inherent to the artist's working method. The edges of the sheet are very slightly discolored at the extreme edges and there is a minor crease at the upper edge. There is a very faint and unobtrusive surface abrasion towards the top edge, just right of center, 3 inches from the top. The sheet is hinged verso to the matte, intermittently along the edges. Framed under Plexiglas.

A Global Perspective:
Fifteen Works from a European Collector

This sophisticated ensemble of fifteen works from a private European collection was assembled under the advice and guidance of the owner’s great friend, the legendary Swiss dealer Ernst Beyeler. Acquired for the most part from Beyeler’s own gallery in Basel, these extraordinary works are testament to the passion of the collector and present an acute sensibility of the international art world from the 1950s through the 1970s.

Led by Sam Francis's breathtaking Untitled work on paper from 1957 and Roy Lichtenstein's iconic Pop Hot Dog from 1964, the collection features remarkable works by many of the most important European and American artists from the Postwar and Contemporary era, including Yves Klein, Alexander Calder and Günther Uecker. Characterized by the vibrancy of the artists’ palettes, encompassing both the figurative and the abstract, this unique collection conveys a global perspective and discerning eye of the collector, and Sotheby’s is honored to present them in the following pages.
