Catalogue Note

Group Intro:

Iniva explores key issues in society and politics through the visual arts. As a not for profit cultural organisation we offer a platform for artistic experiment, cultural debate and the exchange of ideas.
We are establishing a new Commissions and Exhibitions Fund as part of our work in supporting emerging artists from across the globe. Many exciting artists due to their location, culture or environment do not always have the opportunity to challenge and discuss the world through their work. This new initiative aims to provide creative freedom, curatorial support and profile so they can take their careers to the next level.
Founded in 1994, Iniva is a publicly funded organisation and highly respected for seeking out and championing artists from around the world, whose work and ideas provide new perspectives on cultural identity and the diversity of society.
Throughout our history we have worked with notable artists, curators, and writers: Sonia Boyce, Thelma Golden, N.S. Harsha, Keith Piper, Kobena Mercer, Sarat Maharaj to name but a few. Iniva has also played an important role in the early careers of now internationally respected artists such as Yinka Shonibare MBE, Chris Ofili and Mona Hatoum. Simultaneously we have brought to the public’s attention established international artists who are little known in the UK, such as Heri Dono, Sheela Gowda and in 2010, we presented Jia Aili’s first solo exhibition in Europe.
Iniva is indebted to the significant artists who have so generously donated a work for sale and we would like to express our heartfelt thanks. Their shared understanding of the challenges artists can face as they develop their careers, will enable us to provide some of the next generation of international artists with the support they need at a key time. We are indebted too to Sotheby’s, who have provided their invaluable support to this initiative.

Lot quote:

"Art is really about life and it's about politics and it's about actually challenging the establishment. If you are going to create a better world, you want to change things. You use your art to make people see things differently."
