Condition

Colour: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the overall tonality is much brighter and more vibrant in the original. Condition: This work is in very good condition. There are a few very faint and unobtrusive handling marks along the vertical edges. In keeping with the artist's choice of medium and working process, there is some red pigment residue towards the centre of the composition. No restoration is apparent when examined under ultraviolet light.

Catalogue Note

(Sight touch smell)

Artists have been interested in the correspondence of the senses, synesthesia, since at least the 19th century, witness the writings of Charles Baudelaire.

Red Soft Aroma was one of a few of my paintings that played with this idea.

By using an alien material, latex, within the fabric of the picture, the passage of time becomes a dynamic part of the composition.

In ordinary circumstances latex will deteriorate much faster than the oil painting itself. The passage of time thus becomes as important for the picture as it is for ourselves.

After nearly forty years time has already affected the picture, but I have now modified the canvas so that the present latex suit can be replaced when necessary.
