Condition

A nice rich colour and a good example of its type. The rear rail of the lid, on which the hinges are attached is possibly later but does not detract. Some old marks and scratches typical when age and use is considered.

Catalogue Note

There are illustrated examples of other rare 'close stools', Victor Chinnery, Oak Furniture - The British Tradition, Woodbridge, 1979. Chinnery (op. cit. p. 270), who suggests that they were used for storing chamber pots and were a form of 'portable privy' and often had a padded seat to the interior.
