Catalogue Note
This settle is interesting as it has a strong architectural feel, not solely as a result of the panelled construction employed but through elements such as the dentil cornice which surmounts the back, the applied fruitwood split-baluster mouldings and a seat raised on profile baluster supports. All typical features of the 17th century 'Laudian' style.
This style is characterised by strong architectural detailing. It exhibits the influences of Roman-Italianate decoration and the architecture of Inigo Jones and his contemporaries. The label 'Laudian' is derived from decorative work commissioned by William Laud, Bishop of London and later Archbishop of Canterbury (1573–1645), for Lambeth Palace, London and St John's College, Oxford.
