Description

  • gilt-metal, mahogany
  • 82cm. high, 127cm. wide, 63cm. deep; 2ft. 8¼in., 4ft. 2in., 2ft. ¾in.
with gilt-metal mounts, and three drawers between fluted stiles, on square tapering feet, stamped: EDWARDS AND ROBERTS

Condition

This handsome commode has a nice colour and beautiful flamed veneers. There is a thin shrinkage crack running across the width of the top. There are some loses and repairs to the veneers and mouldings. The gilt-brass beading has losses - notably to the top drawer - and is warping slightly in parts. The handles possibly later. The top drawer is stamped 'Edwards & Roberts'. Marks and scratches consistent with age and use.

Catalogue Note

Edwards & Roberts was founded in 1845, and had premises at 21 Wardour Street London. By 1892 they occupied more than a dozen buildings on Wardour Street, where they continued to trade until the end of the century. They were undoubtedly one of the leading London retailers and cabinet makers working with a variety of styles.
