Catalogue Note
Huguet and van Lint were sculptors in marble and alabaster. Their shop in Pisa was 'the oldest established house in Pisa' where a visitor could choose 'from the best assortment of Models of the Duomo, Baptistry, and Tower. Also Figures and other local objects illustrative of the Agriculture and Customs of the Country, executed in the highest style of art.' (C.M. Sicca & A. Yarrington, The lustrous trade material culture and the history of sculpture in England and Italy, c. 1700-c. 1860, London, 2000, p. 12).
Interestingly, Enrico van Lint (1808-1884) was one of the first to develop the art of the calotype in Italy. Between 1850 and 1853 he created more than 300 calotypes, and introduced Ferdinand IV, Grand Duke of Tuscany (1835-1908) to the process (see G. Fanelli, L’immagine di Pisa nell’opera di Enrico Van Lint pioniere della fotografia, Firenze, 2004).
