Catalogue Note

The printed fan entitled 'Nelson & Victory' gives instructions for a variety of fashionable dances to celebrate Nelson’ s victory at the Battle of the Nile, 1798. Another example was donated by Lady Charlotte Schreiber to the British Museum.
The English fan painted with a bagpiper and shepherdesses dressed in plaid is a delicate reference to the Stuart claims to the English throne circa 1745.
