Description

  • Plaque with the Incredulity of St. Thomas
  • partially gilt and polychromed ivory
  • Netherlandish, late 15th century
together with a French, 17th century, Diptych Sundial, with a later representation of the Virgin and Child carved on one of the exterior sides, reputedly from the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, Florence, and thence acquired by Sir Edmund Monson Bt., Her Britannic Majesty's Ambassador to France, and a Netherlandish, 17th century, double-sided oval ivory relief with the Virgin and Child (recto) and the Martyrdom of a Saint (verso), mounted within a gilt metal pendant. 

The two plaques with detached old paper labels documenting their respective provenances.

Provenance

The Plaque with the Incredulity of St. Thomas by repute San Marco, Florence, Italy (said to have been painted by a resident monk, Frate Seraphino)

Condition

Sundial: The hands of the dial and the glass are lost. There are further losses to the mounts, including to the front clasps. There are scratches throughout. There is yellowing to the ivory, particularly to the interior. There is dirt to the surface and discolouration, particularly to the underside. There is stable splitting to the ivory consistent with the material. Plaque: There is wear to the borders, and some small losses (including to the architecture at the upper left). There is rubbing to the high points and losses to the polychromy. The scratches to the reverse are original. Roundel: There is rubbing to the high points. There are small scratches and some wear. The ivory is a little loose in the frame. There is some stable splitting consistent with the material. There is wear to the gilding on the frame.
