worked on canvas panels in polychrome wool threads against an ivory coloured ground, with overall alternating repeat pattern of vertical strapwork incorporating term figures, baskets and vases of flowers, flanking pairs of animals and birds, delicate husk motif pendants swags and trails of foliage, all within a later trellis and stylised foliate motif outer border,
Condition
This panel has probably been reduced in height at top and bottom. Outer border later.
It is comprised of vertically joined panels. There is reworking in areas, for example to faces of some of term figures. Small areas of repair to the cream ground overall, evident as the different tone of cream ground. There is evidence of water marks, cuts and joins especially across the top edge. Some minor areas of pigment added to the brown highlights in places, where browns have oxidised, for example to the cloths with tassels in the lower section of the panel, and to highlights of the shells. This panel is in stable restored condition overall.
It is not lined, which is recommended for hanging purposes in the future, and Velcro would need to be applied across the top edge. Very decorative and striking panel.
When hanging in the gallery off the picture rail it does hang at a slight angle.
