Catalogue Note
Brianville's armorial cards, dedicated to the Dauphin, were originally published in 1659, and due to their popularity were regularly republished, not just in France but across Europe. This set has the arms of Pope Clement IX (1667-1669) on the papal card. The red tax stamp on the five of hearts (Provence, Auvergne and Bresse) indicates that it was in use in England at the start of the eighteenth century.
