Catalogue Note

The ground colour pea-green features prominently in the 1761 sale of the Chelsea wares. Several entries in the sale could possibly be referencing this curious shape. The second day's sale, Friday, 1st May, included lot 40, 'A very fine pair of shepherds bottles of the pea-green ground, curiously enamelled with figures after Watteau'. The third day's sale, 2nd May, lot 48, a pair of the same form and decoration '...and gold ornament handles'. A further pair appears on the 4th day, lot 34.
