Condition
In overall good conserved condition. Colour overall slightly darker and more attractive than in the catalogue photograph. Regilt. Joints of one sound and sturdy. The other the back is unstable and could be due in part to a construction crack where the left arm joins the back but this can easily be restored. Most attractive detail to carving. Some old minor marks and chips commensurate with age and normal usage.Hairline construction cracks at the joints which can be left as they are normal and do not detract from the piece.
Tapestry is late 18th century, with later repairs and reweaving in areas, especially to the central areas of the seats and backs, which are prone to the most wear. Repairs are obvious on close inspection. The areas of light highlight areas have hand repairs, including the feathers of birds and highlights of animals. Dark browns are oxidised in areas. Tapestry on arms with repairs. Repairs around the edges of arm supports, and corners. Sky stable. Colours overall are faded. Overall tapestry is in stable condition. Modern cream textile covering on the reverse of the backs, in good condition.
