Condition
This handsome 'rent' table is in 'country house' condition. The candelabrum and was originally gilded but is now tarnished and possibly could benefit from cleaing according to taste. It is slightly bent out of alignment but could easily be straightened. It is an unusual and original feature. The central ink well has an old chip to the rim. The leather top appears to be the original which is a rare feature. It is characteristically worn and there are splits and marks throughout but is a very pleasing mellow colour. One of the drawer handles is detached, as is a piece of moulding to the left of the drawer marked PQ. These can easily be repaired. There is characteristic wear to the underside of the top and the base. At some stage the base has undergone remedial work including filling to age cracks/splits and the repositioning of castors. There are age cracks to three of the sides of the base running from top to bottom which will require attention. The handles to the base are very tarnished and are possibly a later addition. The piece was probably re-finished early in 20th century. The colour of the top and base are consistent, although the base is slightly lighter. Overall the piece displays marks and scratches consistent with age and use.

Catalogue Note
This table conforms to a popular late 18th century type, sometimes described as a 'rent' table. Practical as well as decorative, the lettered drawers allow for the alphabetical arrangement of important estate papers. A related table, on a square pedestal, was sold Christie's, London, 9 March 2006, lot 182.
