Description

  • Attributed to Theobald Michau
  • Travellers in a cart, a farmer with his pigs, and other country folk on a road by a castle town
  • oil on canvas
  • 17in by 24½in

Condition

The canvas is relined and is tightly stretched, giving a good base for the paint surface. There is not sign of flaking of loss of paint. The surface has a thin craquelure throughout. There are scattered, slightly discoloured, retouchings along the upper edge. The faces of the country folk have not suffered from wear and one can still very much enjoy their expression. Inspection under Ultraviolet light shows older retaouching as mentioned above, and more recent retouchings in teh foliage in the lower part of the canvas, and also in the dirt path, to give the partially sunken brown pigments (this is due to age) greater form. This is all cosmetic and the canvs is in overall in a good state. This charming view is offered in a wood frame painted black, with some gold decorative patterning, which has partially faded due to age. The frame is old and thus slightly loosening at the joins.
