Description
- Hendrick Avercamp
- Misty winter scene with skaters on a frozen river
- oil on panel
- 5½in by 9in
Condition
The elegant little panel is beautifully thin and flat. It is bevelled on all four edges, more significantly on the right and lower edges. There is an uneven varnish which gives the paint surface a slightly mottled appearance under certain light. The paint surface has undergone some damage and the retouchings have partially discoloured. Some of the more intricate details have been lost over time, but there are nevertheless lovely scenes and a palpable atmosphere of misty winter in which the viewer can immerse themselves.
Inspectio under UV light reveals old restoration in the sky and on the darker areas, for example the trees in the background; more recent restoration consists of restrengthening of darker contours and form, for example on the left hand side tree, on the horse, and some figures' clothing.
This lot is offered in a wood frame, with painted gold decoration, partilally faded, in good condition.
