Condition
The canvas is relined and is slightly loose on the stretched, the paint has not been over-pressed and some impasto details still remain. The surface is dirty overall and would benefit from a professional clean by a restorer. There are old retouchings in the sky but otherwise the work has clearly been well looked-after.
This lot is offered in a heavy gilt frame with simple decorative mouldings.

Catalogue Note
This belongs to a large group of works painted by a hitherto unidentified hand. These works were until recently given to William James, an elusive eighteenth century English painter by whom only one signed work is known, a copy of Canaletto's View of the Monument, London.1
