Catalogue Note
Born into a wealthy Jamaican family, Ellis came to England to study at Christchurch in 1789. It was here that he became lifelong friends with George, 1st Viscount Canning, later Prime Minister, a friendship that spurred him into politics.
In 1793 Ellis became one of the youngest Members of Parliament to have entered the House of Commons. A fervent supporter of William Pitt the Younger, Ellis held seats in three separate constituencies before finally settling in Seaford in 1802.
Ellis represented Seaford sporadically until 1826 becoming, in this time, Chairmen of the West Indian Body inside the Commons. It was at this time that Viscount Canning on the verge of being made Prime Minister, led him to be given a peerage. He was created 1st Baron Seaford on the 16th July 1826.
