- oil on canvas
Provenance
Lady Madeleine Threlford;
Her deceased sale, London, Sotheby's, 6 July 1977, lot 189.
Condition
The canvas has been relined and the paint surface is only minorly pressed, parts of impasto still remain and add to the effect if the rocky cave. Overall the paint surface is in stable condition, without loss of paint. The detail in the distance is well-preserved and the scene is very exciting. Inspection under UV light reveals speck retouchings in the black cave wall on the right, and some further retouchings scattered throughout, but no major area of block restorations. There is craquelure throughout and a concentrated line at the the top of the cave mouth running fro about 15 cm, noticeable only to touch rather than to sight.
This lot is offered in a fantastic wooden frame, with thickly carved decoration, some worn parts where a red ground is coming through. In very fine condition.
