Condition
Overall good condition with some wear to the patina. The black varnish seems to be slightly rubbed off at several places, especially to the shoulders and drapery.
The red velvet base shows some wear to the fabric consistent with age and handling. Good cast, very decorative.

Catalogue Note
Elève de Jean-Baptiste II Lemoyne (1704-1778) puis d'Etienne Maurice Falconet (1716-1791), dont elle deviendra brièvement la belle-fille, Marie-Anne Collot s'illustra dans l'art du portrait dans le cercle intellectuel russe dominé par Diderot et son mécène, Catherine II. En 1766, elle accompagne Falconet à Saint-Pétersbourg où l’impératrice le charge de réaliser la statue équestre monumentale de Pierre le Grand. Conscient du talent de portraitiste de son élève, il laissa à sa belle-fille l'honneur de réaliser le visage de cette commande prestigieuse. Travaillant d’après le masque mortuaire du premier empereur de Russie et les nombreux bustes ad vivum visibles à Saint-Pétersbourg, le projet soumis par Marie-Anne Collot, et modèle de notre bronze, fut accueilli avec enthousiasme. Reconnaissance ultime de son art, elle fut élue à l’Académie impériale des Beaux-Arts l’année suivante. Parmi les œuvres issues de sa fulgurante carrière, écourtée par sa séparation et la mort de son beau-père, elle réalisa pour Catherine II un portait en terre cuite de Falconet (Nancy, musée des Beaux-Arts) et un buste de Diderot (Saint-Pétersbourg, Musée de l’Ermitage). Le Louvre conserve plusieurs de ses œuvres, dont un Portrait présumé d’Etienne Noël Damilaville (inv. no RF 1399).
