The illustration is quite accurate.
The mercury gilding is slightly tarnished.

Le Musée des Arts Décoratifs à Paris conserve un dessin de Nicolas Pineau des environs de 1740 (ill. ci-contre), représentant une applique à trois branches au fût ajouré : en pleine vogue du rocaille, les "oves percées" constituent alors un motif très prisé des ornemanistes.
Le modèle de ces appliques est traditionnellement attribué à Jacques Caffieri (1678-1755). Son inventaire après-décès (publié par D. Alcouffe dans les Archives de l'Art Français, 1989, tome XXX, pp.125-142) mentionne au n°95 "un modèle de bras à oves percées complet, prisé cent cinquante livres". Une paire d'un modèle similaire, à trois branches, a été vendue chez Sotheby's à Monaco, les 27 et 28 juin 1998, lot 285, avec une attribution à Jacques Caffieri.
