Catalogue Note

Along with Léon Cauvy, Paul Jouve received a two year award to work as the first resident of the Villa Abd-el-Tif in Algiers, equivalent to the Villa Médicis in Rome. This work, executed in 1908, was taken from a daily life subject of southern Algeria. Initially, the painting was much larger (approximately 3 meters long), but it was altered by the painter himself to focus the subject on the praying man, and remained in his possession up to his death in 1973.
