Catalogue Note

This landscape is to be assimilated to another watercolor by the artist, Le jardin de l’artiste à Bois-le-Roi, dating from 1900-1902 (private collection). In 1903, Georges de Feure showcased a hundred and fifty works including fifty landscapes; a novelty in the artist’s work. From that point on, he only exhibited landscape paintings. “If, by means of being a poster artist, a symbolism painter and an Art Déco decorator (...), he was part of the avant-garde, his landscapes belong to neither the impressionism, nor Gauguin and the Pont-Aven school, nor the Nabis. Yet, they are modern in their own way, and as such as for the rest of his work, the growing influence of Japanese art is more palpable”.
