Catalogue Note
L’Epopée Slave (Slavic tales) is an important set of twenty works relating Slavic history from the 3rd century to the 20th century through ten milestone events. Mucha worked on this tremendous project from 1910 to 1928. The resulting masterpiece was presented in Prague in 1928, on the celebration day of Czechoslovakia’s tenth anniversary and was preserved in the Moravsky castle, until its recent transfer, on May the 10th 2012 to the Veletrní palace as the artist had wished for.
The present sketch is close in composition to the group positioned at the top left hand corner of the original work: les Slaves dans leur patrie d’origine, depicting the Slavs as an army emerging from the mists of time.
