This work is in good condition, but it requires some attention. The complex composition has developed some cracking within the figure and particularly along the bottom edge. This cracking seems to stem almost entirely from pentimenti of changes in the composition. The canvas has been lined, and the paint layer is now stable. The painting is slightly dirty. Under ultraviolet light, one can see retouching in the chest of the artist and a few spots to the lower right of his chair. There are also retouches in the upper left and in the lower center to the right of the primitive sculpture. (This condition report has been provided courtesy of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc.)
