Description

the large rounded vessel set with metal bail handles, carved around the sides through layers of black lacquer to the red ground below with four phoenix among peony flowers, the large birds variously depicted with outstreched wings among the densely foliate scrolls, their plumage and the flowers marked with incisions, some areas left plain, all between bands of foliate ruyi encircling the brown lacquered top and base

Condition

The vessel is possibly adapted from a lacquer basin, now converted as a drum and relacquered on the top and the base. The carving is left unfinished in areas, there are some age crackles in commensuration with age, and some wear and dirt accretion on the lacquer ground below. The actual colour is consistent with the catalogue illustration.
