A Large Blue and White Double-Gourd Vase Ming Dynasty, Wanli Period

Description

of double-gourd form, the generously rounded lower body tapering at the waist before rising to a compressed globular upper bulb surmounted by a long neck, the neck decorated with two registers, each with variously shaped cartouches enclosing floral and foliate motifs, the upper bulb divided into six wide panels alternating with thin strips, each panel enclosing large floral blooms, including lotus and peonies, all above the lower bulb with two further registers, each detailed with floral and fruiting branches within shaped cartouches

Condition

There is a 2 cm hairline crack to the rim. There are typical scattered firing imperfections on the surface glaze including unburst air bubbles, iron spots and fritting, the latter predominantly around the shoulder and around the base at the level of the bottom edges of the vertical grooves encircling the lower body. The actual colour is somewhat paler and more greyish blue compared to the catalogue illustration. There is also a blue tinge to the white.
