carved in openwork in the form of a stylised pair of confronting mythical birds with undulating bodies enclosing a cartouche, carved in low relief on one side with a scholar facing the trunk of a pine tree, the reverse inscribed in semi-cursive script with the poem Huazigang by Peidi, the smoothly polished stone of even white colour
