Description

  • Rhinoceros horn on carved wood stand
carved in the form of an archaic bronze ewer yi, with a pedestal foot rising up to wide flaring sides and a channelled spout set opposite a loop handle, decorated around the exterior with a low-relief frieze of taotie mask against a finely carved leiwen ground, one side further decorated in openwork with a chilong clambering on the handle and resting its head on the rim, four further chilong clambering by its sides and two further chilong flanking the handle below, all between a key-fret band encircling the rim and the foot, the horn of a warm reddish-brown colour, wood stand

Condition

The overall condition is quite good. There are a few nicks and four small chips along the rim, the largest of approximately 0.5 cm. long. There is an approximately 0.5 cm. long chip to the front leg of the Chilong atop the handle.
