Catalogue Note
After winning the Gold Medal for his painting The Tribe of Benjamin Seizing the Daughters of Shiloh in 1847 Millais was required to undertake a timed trial of his abilities, to paint a picture under the scrutiny of the Committee of the Royal Academy Schools. According to the minutes of the Royal Academy, this took place on 15 November 1847 and Millais was given five hours to complete his task - he finished in an hour and a half.
We are very grateful to Dr Malcolm Warner for his assistance with the cataloguing of this picture.
