Original canvas which undulates. There is a small hole approx. 1cm across in the figure's hair and some discoloured retouching around his nose which appears to relate to an old tear and corresponding patch on the reverse. Also a small tear to the figure's elbow. Some craquelure across the surface and the surface is dirty. Ultraviolet light reveals an opaque varnish and retouching to the nose corresponding with the above. Held in a gilt plaster frame.
