Catalogue Note
A new discovery in Henry's oeuvre, Landscape is dated c.1929-30 on stylistic grounds and possibly depicts a scene in County Wicklow. As Yvonne Scott has commented of such pictures, ‘the symbolism of nurture is instantly readable, as is the relationship with the very body of the country itself’ (Yvonne Scott, introduction to exhibition catalogue The West as Metaphor, Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, March 2005, p. 28). Landscape is typical of Henry’s later treatment of the landscape of the West of Ireland and also typical in that little impasto has been used. Landscape is numbered 1284 in S. B. Kennedy’s ongoing cataloguing of Paul Henry’s oeuvre.
We are grateful to S.B. Kennedy for kindly preparing this catalogue entry.
