Condition
Original canvas. Some areas of craquelure predominantly to the darker areas of pigment; overall work appears generally sound.
It is difficult to read the surface conclusively under ultraviolet light but there appear to be no signs of retouching.
Held under perspex in original gilt plaster frame; unexamined out of frame.

Bloodhounds were a popular subject for Riviere, featuring in The Last of the Garrison of 1875, In Manus Tuas, Domini of 1879 (both Manchester City Art Gallery), Envy, Hatred and Malice of 1881 (Sotheby's, New York, 2 November 2002, lot 80), Compulsory Education of 1887 (sold in these rooms, 16 December 2010, lot 32) and the popular Requiescat in 1888 (Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney).
