Catalogue Note

A striking Continental Army commission from the first few weeks of American Independence. A lawyer from Virginia, Samuel Griffin served as aide-de-camp to General Charles Lee. He was wounded at the Battle of Harlem Heights, and the diversionary maneuvers he led against British troops at Bordentown, New Jersey, contributed to the success of George Washington's crossing the Delaware to attack Trenton.
