Catalogue Note
Elizabeth "Böske" Antheil was the wife of the composer George Antheil. In 1936, she opened a gallery in Los Angeles, with Julien Levy as sponsor. Miró thanks her for exhibiting his work and is very proud the very first painting sold at the new gallery was his work. He details an upcoming exhibition of his early paintings from 1918-1919 and his current project, working with Pablo Picasso to decorate the Spanish Pavilion at the International Exposition of 1937 (where Picasso exhibited Guernica and Miró the "El Segador," the latter work was lost or destroyed in 1938).
Answering Böske's enquiries about "young" artists, Miró provides his opinions on the new generation: "Balthus a dans son esprit une valeur [Balthus has value in his spirit]; Giacometti est une esculpteur qui ne doit pas être très connu en Amérique [Giacometti is a sculptor who is probably not very well known in the United States]; González est un esculpteur qui [...] malgré ses 60 ans [...] est presque inconnu et a un très vif interêt [González is a sculptor who [...] despite his 60 years old is almost unknown but is of great interest]."
