Catalogue Note

Manet writes on Charles Monginot's award of the Legion of Honour.

Louis-Felix Allart was the mayor of Brienne, hometown of both Manet and Monginot.

Manet met Monginot at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts where they were pupils of Thomas Couture, a popular portrait and still-life painter. Manet included his likeness in La Musique aux Tuileries, next to Fantin-Latour, Charles Baudelaire, Théophile Gautier, Zacharic Astruc, Rossini and the artist himself.
