Catalogue Note

A fine memento of Custer's Civil War career and his courtship.

Elizabeth Bacon (1842-1833) met Custer in the Fall of 1862. He courted her, against her father's wishes, until he was promoted to Brevet Brigadier General after his exploits at the Battle of Gettysburg, when her father relented and they married 9 February 1864.

On the verso the first owner wrote (in pencil): "Presented to me by Mrs. Elizabeth B Custer, Dec 24th 1882, John Camush" suggesting that this may have been Custer's gift to her during their courtship to demonstrate his sensitive and creative side.
