Catalogue Note

"A very famous collection, illustrated with many colored engravings, which first printed 'Little Miss Muffet' and 'Bobby Shafto'" (Cahoon). First edition (included here) appeared in 1805 without illustrations, the plates ("the first full-page illustrations of nursery rhymes" Opie) were added in 1818.

The 1822 edition is very rare, especially in this condition. Worldcat lists one copy (BL) and only two copies have appeared at auction in the past forty years (one incomplete). From the library of the great comic actor Joe E. Brown (1891-1973).
