Catalogue Note

First edition, inscribed (presumably) by the wife of the publisher, "From Mrs. Jarrold. Bracondale." The binding is similar to Carter's variant B in that the horse's head and rustic portions of the frame are in black while the floral decoration, reins and panels are in gilt, but the title is in black (not gilt). Very few copies of this rare classic appear on the market, and presentation copies inscribed by the author are virtually unknown as she died shortly after publication.
