For the first, title printed in red and black; top margin of title renewed affecting the first letter "A", some marginal spotting and soiling. 19th-century calf, double-fillet border, gold floral stamps at four corners, spine gilt; hinges worn and partially mended, corners and edges torn, foot of spine chipped. Two sheets of bibliographic notes laid in. For the second, publisher's advertisement facing title; occasional spotting or soiling, without the publisher's catalogue at the end. Publisher's green ribbed cloth, gold-stamped vignette on upper cover, gold-stamped title on spine; joints and extremities mended.

Catalogue Note
it is still regarded as invaluable for the study of dialect and folklore" (Keynes). A second edition appeared in 1678 and in its preface Ray apologized "to sober and pious persons" for the offence caused by the inclusion in the first edition of proverbs "savouring too much of obscenity, being apt to suggest impure fancies to corrupt minds," explaining that these have been omitted from the later edition.
