Half-title, plates and text illustrations; a few quires coming loose, some marginal spots or soiling. Publisher's maroon quarter cloth and decorated paper boards with title and imprint on upper cover, gilt-stamped title on spine; corners and edges torn. Ms. exlibris "Emily S. Hale. Feb 1871" on front pastedown. First appearance in England of "The Owl and the Pussycat." Noakes 82a and p. 171 — Laughable Lyrics: A Fourth Book of Nonsense Poems, Songs, Botany, Music, &c. London: Robert John Bush, 1877. 4to (7 7/8 x 6 1/4 in.; 200 x 158 mm). Half-title, plates and text illustrations. Publisher's blue cloth gilt and blindstamped pictorial boards with title and imprint on upper cover, gilt-stamped title on spine; hinges mended, corners torn, head and foot of spine mended. First edition. Inscribed "Frank Agnew with Momma's best hoe. New Year's Day 1877" on front flyleaf. Noakes 87b — A Book of Nonsense. London: Frederick Warne & Co., New York: Scribner, Welford, and Armstrong, n.d. Large 4to (10 1/4 x 8 3/4 in.; 260 x 222 mm). Frontispiece, title, and color plates all printed on one side only; some light marginal soiling. Publisher's maroon pictorial cloth, stamped in gilt and blind with title on upper cover and spine; extremities worn, a few stains on covers. Inscribed "Amy Paulington from W. A. Caunter" on front flyleaf.
