In Phila. or Williamsburg Virginia" and franked "Go: Washington," remnant of red wax seal; laid down on brittle board, browned, tear in top blank margin crudely repaired with transparent tape, upper right corner of the letter, containing the date, broken off but present.

Washington writes to Samuel Griffin, retired from active duty and serving on Virginia's Board of War, to thank him for a suit of clothing and other articles that the Board had sent to the commander in chief. "I have been honoured with your favor of the 24th Ulto., but not till yesterday.—The present offered by the board of War of Virginia, I shall receive as a testimony of their polite attention & good will, and beg the favor of you to make my acknowledgments accordingly.—Permit me at the same time, to thank you for the obliging expressions which accompanied the present. …"
