The USS Yankee served as an auxillary vessel throughot the Spanish-American War, taking part in actions at Guantánamo Bay, Cienfuegos, Casilda and the Cuban blockade. While reservist Russell Doubleday's published account of his experiences serving as No. 5 on the after port gun are detailed from daily life to engaging the enemy are of great interest and detail, the original photos offera remarkable record of life on board a United States steamer. Images from the Spanish American War are uncommon and naval images seem particularly so.
