Catalogue Note

The first English abridgement of Mme d'Aulnoy's fairy tales, originally published in 1716. The earliest editions contained only a pictorial frontispiece; for this new edition the frontispiece has been replaced with separate woodcuts for each tale.

The seven tales were selected from nine stories printed in 1697 as Contes des Fées: four of these had previously appeared in English in 1699 (no copy known) with the balance first translated as part of the authors collected works in 1707.
