Catalogue Note
First edition of the first English translation of Andersen's fairy tales. Mrs. Howitt, a popular writer for children, learned Danish to make this translation. She is also remembered as the author of "Will you walk into my parlour? Said the spider to the fly." Three other collections were published in England in the same year: one translated by Caroline Peachey and published by William Pickering, and two translated by Charles Boner and published by Cundall.
