Linton engraving after G.C. Potter photograph of Whitman on verso inserted after p. 284— Rivulets with mounted frontispiece photograph of Whitman by G. F. E. Pearsall, inscribed and signed by Whitman (as in all located copies), four section-titles; some very light browning. Uniformly bound in half cream leather, spines blindstamped and with morocco lettering-pices, marbled sides, yellow endpapers; rebacked with spines laid down, worn and rubbed. Half-morocco clamshell cases, gilt-stamped lettering pieces.

Catalogue Note

Presentation copy of the Author's Edition of 1876, inscribed on the front free endpaper of each volume, "Godfrey Lushington from the author." In addition, the mounted frontispiece portrait in Two Rivulets is inscribed and signed by Whitman. These two volumes were designed to be sold together during America's centenniel years as Whitman's Complete Works. Leaves is Myerson's "Second (American) issue" and Rivulets is first printing of the only edition.

With: Autograph postcard from Whitman to Sir Godfrey Lushington of London, Camden, NJ, 31 August [1876], which reads, "I to-day forward to you by mail, same address as this card, a set of my Books — Two Vols.  Please let me know (by postal card will do) if they reach you safely. Another set, same Vols will be sent you soon — W. W."

Sir Godfrey Lushington (1832–1907) was a distinguished British civil servant and authority on prison reform.
