8vo (7 7/8 x 4 3/4 in.; 201 x 121 mm). Very light spotting to title. Publisher's brown cloth, spine gilt-lettered, spine and covers blindstamped, yellow endpapers; some skillful restoration work to spine, some browning to endpapers. Half-green morocco gilt slipcase, chemise.

First edition, first issue of Thoreau's first book, lacking "Author of 'Walden'" printed under author's name on title-page.  This book, published at Thoreau's expense, fared poorly: of the 1000 copies printed, 706 copies were returned to the author.
