Catalogue Note

First edition, first issue of the American edition, preceded by the English earlier that year. A work with real social impact; Melville used his experience serving on a man-o-war to expose in detail the terrible and degrading treament of the sailors. The distribution of copies to the Senate played a role in flogging being outlawed on naval vessels.
